A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Darryl Wharton-Rigby has been a jack of all trades and has worked diligently to be a master of one – filmmaking.
Darryl’s journey has had twists and turns as he navigated from Charm City to the land of the rising sun. Currently, two is a number that follows him like a lost puppy. He’s written for two NBC television shows, Homicide: Life On The Street and Just Deal; has two feature films under his belt, Detention and Stay (the second African-American to make feature films in Baltimore and Japan); and two one man plays, FreeDa Slave: Mask of a Diva and Here Come The Drums. The latter starred Russell Hornsby and earned eight NAACP Theatre Award nominations. Even eight can be divided by two.
Darryl is an international storyteller who explores the human experience and builds cultural bridges. He is passionate about human and equal rights, LGBTQ issues, immigration, and those who are disenfranchised. Lately much of his writing features Black faces in international spaces. Via his work, he’d like to create a level playing field.
Over the years he has been a lifeguard, cancer research tech, men’s clothing salesman, and stonemason apprentice. He once drove across the United States in fifty-seven hours, on a diet of bananas, water, and Red Bulls, while only listening to the music of Prince, without repeating a song. And, in Japan, he is featured as the DJ in the hit AKB48 music video, Koi Suru Fortune Cookie, which has more than 215 million views on YouTube and doesn’t get recognized.
Darryl lives in Saitama, Japan and credits his wife and three wonderful children as his ultimate muse.
